Earth Sciences Division
esd.png ESD was founded in 1977 supporting research in geothermal, nuclear waste and geosciences programs. For over 30 years, while the leadership of the ESD changed ESD's research areas remained true to supporting the earth, energy security, and the environment in: fundamental research in hydrogeology and reservoir engineering, geophysics and geomechanics, geochemistry, microbial ecology, and environmental engineering.

Environmental Energy Technologies Division
eetd.png The mission of Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division is to perform analysis, research and development leading to better energy technologies and reduction of adverse energy-related environmental impacts. Our work increases the efficiency of energy use, reduces its environmental effects, provides the nation with environmental benefits, and helps developing nations achieve similar goals through technical advice.

Life Sciences Division

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) contributes to strategic Berkeley Lab and National efforts to increase understanding of bio-fuel production and bioremediation, cancer and the microenvironment, DNA repair, radiation biology, genome structure and function, neurodegenerative diseases and structural biology.

National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center
nersc.gif The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is the flagship scientific computing facility for the Office of Science in the U.S. Department of Energy. As one of the largest facilities in the world devoted to providing computational resources and expertise for basic scientific research, NERSC is a world leader in accelerating scientific discovery through computation. NERSC is located at Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, California.

Physical Biosciences Division
pbd.jpg Biology in the 21st century will be a quantitative and predictive science. We are now poised to return to the origins of scientific inquiry - natural philosophy - as the tools and concepts of physical science become applicable to the central concerns of biology. The mission of the Physical Biosciences Division is to provide the multidisciplinary intellectual backdrop and the physical resources to build the programs and tools that will make this vision a reality.
