UC researchers are optimistic that these new, improved eco-driving techniques can cut fuel use by 10 to 20 percent, a significant amount given the tough emission reduction requirements the state must meet over the next eight years under AB32, the Global Warming Solutions Act. “Now may be the right time to push eco-driving due to a combination of factors,” said Susan Shaheen, co-director of UC Berkeley’s Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC). Experts at the UC Pavement Research Center use a variety of machines, ovens, and baths to test different blends of asphalt — all in the search for ways to make cheaper, greener, and better-performing roads and highways. Apr 26 2011 UC Berkeley News Center
In a new report from the City Streets Project, an initiative from Berkeley Law’s Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, the authors examine the historical basis for regrettable design habits in city planning, and consider the feasibility of choosing better ways. Mar 1 2011 The Legal Planet
University of California, Berkeley, chemists have engineered bacteria to churn out a gasoline-like biofuel at about 10 times the rate of competing microbes, a breakthrough that could soon provide an affordable and “green” transportation fuel. Mar 1 2011 UC Berkeley News Center
The U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) was launched by Presidents Obama and Hu in 2009, and the work plans cover energy efficient buildings, clean coal, and clean vehicles. The Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is on of the U.S. research consortia for the areas. Jan 19 2011 The White House

Oil and gas wells vent or flare off natural gas. New technology shows that this is actually a lot more gas than anyone knew — about four percent of production, according to GAO. Capturing that natural gas for sale would give the government millions of dollars in royalties. Vented gas is methane, a more potent greenhouse gas than the CO2 which would be emitted if the gas were captured and burned. If captured, gas that is currently flared could be sold, replacing part of current natural gas production and reducing greenhouse gases. Dec 20 2010 Legal Planet by Dan Farber
Since state voters approved a bond measure in 2008 to authorize construction of a system linking north and south, the California High Speed Rail Authority has faced lawsuits over its unfortunate planned route away from the population centers of the northern Central Valley, opposition from wealthy suburbanites south of San Francisco to the portion that would link the city to San Jose, and a huge funding shortfall to build the system that was originally envisioned. The grand opening of the student cooperative BicyCal took place in lower Sproul Plaza on November 19, as a "peer-to-peer" bike-maintenance education center. There, BicyCal members with mechanical know-how will help campus cyclists keep their bikes in working order — offering repairs and do-it-yourself information. Nov 23 2010 UC Berkeley News Center
Many students and faculty here at UC Berkeley have gone the green route and purchased a bicycle to navigate our 1,232 acre campus. The decision to buy a bike in itself is very much a green decision, but what people might not know is that this ecologically friendly decision can be even more green with just a little forethought. To tally the energy consumption of a city, the usual method is to add up all the energy used by residents. But how should one account for the energy that went into building the office park where people work or paving the roads that people drive? And what about the energy required to make the clothes they are wearing? Scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have created a new energy model for Chinese cities that takes such factors into account Sep 29 2010 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
University of California, Berkeley, researchers have taken genes from grass-eating fungi and stuffed them into yeast, creating strains that produce alcohol from tough plant material – cellulose – that normal yeast can't digest. Sep 9 2010 Berkeley News by Robert Sanders
Developed at UC Berkeley, VEVCo (as the company calls itself) has developed a mobile application for smart phones that can track a user’s driving behavior using inputs like the embedded GPS and largely without the driver having to manually input any information. Jul 26 2010 CNN Money.com
The new bike station, above ground and four times the size of the old one, provides restrooms, an electronic bike-locking system, is open 24 hours a day, costs three cents an hour and makes it easier for people to ride their bikes to and from BART and park their bicycles safely. It also includes a bike rental facility, bike repairs, bikes and equipment for sale and the ability to apply for free BART parking until 9:00 p.m. five days a week. Jul 15 2010 The Daily Californian
The California High-Speed Rail Authority's forecasts of demand and ridership for a new San Francisco-to-Los Angeles high-speed train are not reliable because they are based on an inconsistent model, according to a new study by researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley (ITS Berkeley).
