Special Symposium - Earthquakes, tsunamis, and nuclear fallout: Is California at risk like Japan?
As Japan grapples with the effects of a massive earthquake, devastating tsunami, and potentially catastrophic meltdown of multiple nuclear reactors, it is appropriate to consider whether California faces similar risks.  The Berkeley Institute of the Environment, College of Letters and Science, the Department of Earth & Planetary Science, and Berkeley Seismological Laboratory will host this symposium with a panel of experts that will seek to address many of the questions that are on minds of Californians as we follow the calamity in Japan.

Tom McKone, a senior staff scientist in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (Berkeley Lab’s) Environmental Energy Technologies Division, is an expert on health-risk assessments associated with exposure to environmental contaminants such as pesticides and radioactive material. Here he sheds light on the crisis in Japan in an e-mail exchange with Berkeley Lab’s communications and media relations department.

It is a coincidence that the Union of Concerned Scientists has released a new report on nuclear power plant safety while the Japanese nuclear crisis continues to unfold. Yet, the heightened awareness that many people now have of the importance of nuclear plant cooling systems may put us in a better position to understand the significance of the UCS findings.
